Garden design

We look at a multitude of things when considering the design; from overall garden layout, how spaces will be used, hard landscaping, lighting and carefully considered planting combinations and planting plans. We also look to the architecture of your home and the ‘borrowed landscape’ surrounding your plot to enrich the design. We create spaces that will enhance the gardens use so that your garden becomes that all important extra room.

Domestic and commercial garden design

We work on projects spanning private gardens to large-scale public and commercial projects. However large or small your project, we use creativity, knowledge and attention to detail to bring your aspirations to life. During the process we work closely with you at every stage from the initial consultation to the construction and planting stages and finally aftercare advice and consultation.
To date we have designed gardens that reflect the broad range of garden styles; from cottage garden, naturalistic and prairie style planting to modern-contemporary or urban style gardens. We are proud to work with and source plants for the gardens that we design from specialist and well-renowned plant nurseries. We pride ourselves on listening to you, the client to create a space that is bespoke to you.

Our trusted team of garden designers

To bring your garden and our vision and designs to life, we work closely with a trusted team of landscapers and other tradespeople, who take the paper-based design and transform it into what will ultimately be your desired garden. We also work with architects and sculptors on both large- and small-scale designs across Nottingham, Yorkshire and Derbyshire.
Putting our clients at the centre of everything we do is crucial. We listen so we can understand your vision and dreams and create a garden that is bespoke to you. We are passionate about getting the design right.

Garden landscape design

Let’s face it – any home improvement or large renovation project can be time-consuming and somewhat daunting! There will need to be decisions about how big the patios or terraces should be and where they would best be sited. Choices about which plants will thrive and indeed how to keep them alive! How to utilise the garden throughout the year, how to light the space. In fact, there are so many questions, where do you start?

Garden makeovers

We, wholeheartedly, feel that creating your new garden and thus that all-important extension of your home, should be an exciting and enjoyable process. We use all of our knowledge, expertise and experience to make it so.

Designing and bringing a garden to fruition takes planning and organisation and that is where we come in. We appreciate that working with a garden designer might seem a little extravagant, but in the long run will probably save you time and money!

“Home of Gardens are fantastic. They have brilliant ideas and helped to transform our front garden from a tired looking mess into a great looking low maintenance garden to be proud of. I would absolutely recommend them to everyone. Practical and affordable.”

To help you understand the process and know what to expect. We have outlined the steps that we take on the way to creating your tailor-made garden.

1. Free quotation visit

Your garden design begins with an Initial Consultation visit. At this meeting, we establish your requirements, ideas and budget. As part of the consultation, we will walk around your garden to ascertain its potential and listen to ideas you may have on how you would like the garden developed.

During this consultation, we will ask you if you would like us to carry out a Site Survey, which will result in 3 or 4 Concept Diagrams. These diagrams show how the different spaces in your garden can be used and also will look at different layout styles; from curved and circular design to rectilinear themed or diagonal themed. The possibilities are often endless!

2. Site survey

During the Site Survey, we will take detailed measurements of the garden boundaries and features, which will then be used to produce a scale drawing of your existing garden. This initial drawing will then provide the basis for the Concept Diagram and design brief. This initial drawing will show the house, boundaries, levels and any existing trees and features. As part of the Site Survey, we will take photographs to help assess the character and setting of the garden. We will also ascertain the aspect and microclimate, soil type and drainage of your garden.

The Concept Diagrams will form the basis for our next meeting with you. The concept designs will be pencil drawn and will illustrate possible layouts. This along with pictures and sketches will help to inform our discussion with you on how you would like the garden to look and feel and how the space will be used.

3. Master Design Plan

Utilising all the information we have gathered so far, we will then create the Master Design Plan for your garden. The Master Design Plan is a detailed scale drawing, which will show the positions of proposed paths and paving, walls and fences. The drawing will also illustrate the character of the planting. Although at this stage individual plants will not be recorded. When the layout and materials have been agreed, we will work on a detailed costing.

4. Planting Plans

Planting plans include a full plant list, the quantities of and the positions of all plants required to transform your garden and complete the overall design. Once we have agreed on everything with you, we will then work out a full detailed costing.

5. Project Management & Construction

We work with our trusted landscape contractors, who are also on hand to co-project manage your garden with us each step of the build and construction of your garden. We will all sit down and have a detailed conversation of the timelines involved and the processes that need to be put in to place to ensure you get the garden of your dreams.

6. Maintenance Schedules & Aftercare

We also provide a maintenance schedule within an aftercare booklet that will help you or your gardener care for and maintain your garden. The maintenance schedule will refer directly back to your planting plan, highlight key plants for each month and also list tasks that you or your gardener should do each month to maintain and enhance your garden going forward.
